Al-Khair North City Hospital · Karachi

We came to teach. We stayed because people were sick.

Since 2011 we have built schools on the edge of Karachi’s largest landfill. Our teams kept meeting the same problem outside the classroom, so we opened a small clinic. It has outgrown itself. Al-Khair North City Hospital is what comes next.

Why this hospital

The nearest real hospital is too far, and too expensive

We are at double the capacityWe need to move fast.
No ENT specialty hospitals nearbyDespite 60% of our walk-in cases arriving as ENT issues, there is a lack of ENT specialty programs and services available in New Karachi and North Karachi. Our future hospital is the destination.
Expanding surgical servicesOur specialists have doubled surgical capacity but the wait lists remain long. Today, our clinic performs outpatient procedures such as tonsillectomies, thyroidectomies and hernia repairs.

Bushra, a doctor, with a patient at the clinic in Karachi
Our doctors know the community

Bushra grew up here. Now she treats patients here.

Bushra was raised in the slums of New Karachi, one of nine sisters. Her mother, Fatima, enrolled every one of them in Thaakat’s schools.

She studied through power cuts and crowded rooms, by candlelight. She didn’t get into medical school on her first attempt, took a year, and applied again.

Today Bushra is a doctor. She sees patients at Thaakat’s own clinic, the one this hospital is being built to replace.

1 in 3+More than a third of Thaakat’s staff were educated in Thaakat’s own schools.
